01 - The Work
An architecture that was found, not built
Foreign Nature is a fully immersive fractal environment. Its landscapes are generated from mathematical formulas and rendered in Mandelbulb3D — structures that are self-similar, so that whether you zoom in or out the code appears to recreate the whole. When micro mirrors macro — atom, cell, solar system — scale becomes impossible to read. Human beings have long looked for divine significance in shapes and patterns: sacred geometry informing churches, pyramids and standing stones built to connect our world to higher powers. Guided by an invisible logic, crystals bloom; galaxies whirl into being.
The work envelops the whole body. Its visuals recall those described by people who have experienced altered states of consciousness — only here the psychoactive is mathematics itself. Ben Lukas Boysen's score, written specifically for the piece, carries the audience through it. We may never know whether our interstellar neighbours breathe our oxygen, or the colour of their suns. But if our physics extends to their planets, plants will grow and clouds will take shape under the same laws. These fractals are a glimpse of a universe many lightyears away.
